There are various signs that your dog may be a flat face breed; these include:
Their head is wider than their neck.
They show significant breathing difficulties when active or excited (for example).
This is because they cannot breathe through their nose normally due to the short
muzzle; when smelling things, they tend to hyperventilate, which in turn causes
respiratory problems like repeated lung infections and, in severe cases,
pneumonia (this can lead them eventually to loss of breath and death in
extreme
conditions).
Their eyes are near the top of their heads.
They also have bulging eyes, which can cause problems getting around (for
example). Their eyes may slip out of the sockets, but this will not be a problem with
regular care.
Some breeds like the Pug and English Bulldog (an extreme case) do not have teeth!
That's right; they do not grow teeth during their lifetime. As the owner, it is up to
you to consider that your dog needs special ways of eating food just like he would
if they had no teeth. You will need to use special foods that are soft enough for
them to eat without having teeth. That also means you need to be prepared before
emergencies since these dogs cannot eat in times of pain or injured.
Some dogs can even have problems breathing when their body temperature rises.
This is because the heat will make it harder for them to breathe through their
noses. The Pug, French Bulldog, and English Bulldog are some examples.
This does not mean that you cannot get a flat nose dog; you need to be aware of this
health issue before it arises to plan accordingly. What do they look like? The general
shape of Flat-Faced breeds is usually round with wide eyes, short legs, and floppy ears!
Other animals may have longer snouts or shorter curves depending on how much
breed-specific genes dominate in them.
